(Mus.) a note followed by a dot to indicate an increase of length equal to one half of its simple value; thus, a dotted semibreve is equal to three minims, and a dotted quarter to three eighth notes.

Book 2, for intermediate pianists, contains eight pieces, almost all three pages long and characterized by greater use of dotted rhythms and syncopation, wider ranging melodic and accompaniment patterns, longer ternary forms with more florid melodic variation, and unexpected modulations.
In the opening movement of Beethoven's Seventh, the dotted rhythms seemed laboured.
In other words, to go beyond the heraldic and haughty dotted rhythms so often associated with the trumpet repertoire of old, and to provide something florid, even ethereal.
