A river rising in north-central Spain and flowing about 772 km (480 mi) westward then southwestward along the Spanish-Portuguese border. It enters the Atlantic Ocean at Oporto.

For the sake of a bit of trivia and actually imparting some relatively useful information, Douro is just up the road from Spain's definitely up-and-coming Ribera del Duero.
After a coffee we took off on a new, EU-funded motorway that meanders into the heart of the Douro Valley.
