down quark
n. Abbr. d
A quark with a charge of - 1/3 , a mass about 20 times that of the electron, and a downward spin. It is a component of protons and neutrons. See Table at subatomic particle.

down quark  (doun)
A quark with a charge of -1/3. Its mass is greater than that of the electron and the up quark, but smaller than that of all the other quarks. See Table at subatomic particle.

quark - (physics) hypothetical truly fundamental particle in mesons and baryons; there are supposed to be six flavors of quarks (and their antiquarks), which come in pairs; each has an electric charge of +2/3 or -1/3; "quarks have not been observed directly but theoretical predictions based on their existence have been confirmed experimentally"

The smallest of the elements and matter can be broken down quarks which are nothing but energy.
Three spinons, for example--two of one kind, one of another- could make particles with electric charge of +2/3, like the up quark, or -1/3, like the down quark.
The first matter in this regard straddles both spheres in that the predominant observed or theoretical decay products of a weak neutral boson are admixtures of bottom with strange and/or down quarks in heavy mesons, and practically is the only known particle that can directly decay to a strange Bs-meson.
