This is particularly true of her discussion of the ethnic Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party in Tamil Nadu. Under pressure from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief minister of the Tamil Nadu and Samata Party, allies of the ruling NDA, the Centre advised the Gujarat government to retrace its steps, with which the latter complied. India's geographical proximity, its concern for stability in the region, its military capabilities, its disinclination to see a separate Tamil state in Sri Lanka (as that could potentially lead to calls for a Dravida Desam--a Tamil state--in south India) but its interest nevertheless in ensuring that Sri Lankan Tamil discontent does not spill over to Tamil Nadu all make it an ideal, albeit unrealistic, third party candidate. |
