Measuring five meters (16 feet) in length with a long, flat cranium, short forearms and jaws full of sharp teeth, Austroraptor was among the largest of the raptors, and belonged to the dromaeosaurids or birdlike dinosaurs that walked on two legs, the most famous of which was the Velociraptor mongoliensis.
True "raptors" are known to scientists as dromaeosaurids (DROH-mee-uh-SAW-rids)--meat eaters with stiff tails and a large sharp claw on each hand and foot.
After years of review, Pol and Argentine paleontologist Fernando Novas reported in Nature that fragments of vertebrae and ribs, parts of legs, and a signature claw on foot provided the first definitive evidence of dromaeosaurids, or raptors, in South America similar to the velociraptor (of the film Jurassic Park fame).
