Ben Hong, product development manager for Promar Nets, said until recently hoop nets were used mostly by Northern Californians after Dungeness crabs.
Washington, home of the nation's largest oyster-rearing operations, and Oregon also have substantial fisheries for Manila clams, mussels, and the prized Dungeness crabs, whose tiny young mature in the same rocky marine shallows that green crabs prefer.
California has lots of experience rebuilding its sardine and salmon fisheries and carefully regulating its Dungeness crabs, shark and halibut fisheries for long term sustainability.
