This scheme, known as "tumbling the ESN," involves altering the program in the telephone hardware, causing the phone to send out random ESNs.
Traditionally, mobile phones have used ESNs as a way to uniquely identify each and every mobile device manufactured for use on a CDMA network.
During the first six months of 1986, 21-digit validation systems that can verify ESNs and MINs were installed.
