outer ear  (outr)
The part of the ear in many vertebrates that is external to the eardrum (tympanic membrane) and contains the canal leading to the eardrum as well as the ear lobe and other visible structures. In mammals, the outer ear, which is made mostly of cartilage, gathers and focuses incoming sound waves and transmits them to the eardrum. See more at ear1.

If an epidermoid carcinoma of the scalp, face, eyelid, conjunctiva, malar region, radix of the nose, upper lip, anterior ear, external ear canal, or preauricular or postauricular region occurs simultaneously with an epidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland, metastasis from those regions should be suspected rather than a primary parotid gland lesion.
Patients may require surgical correction of the external ear, external auditory canal, choanae, or palate.
Examination revealed a normal-appearing right external ear, external auditory canal, and tympanic membrane.
