The merger of Zawahiri's Egyptian Islamic Jihad and Al-Qaeda in 1998 led to one of the deadliest terrorist movements the world has ever known.
Finally, that same year, according to administration officials interviewed by The Weekly Standard, Saddam paid $300,000 to Ayman Al Zawahiri, the leader of Egyptian Islamic Jihad who soon afterward became bin Laden's right hand man.
According to documents introduced by federal prosecutors in the 1998 Kenya and Tanzania embassy bombing cases, the Egyptian Islamic Jihad and Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda effectively merged several years ago.
