1. The pulse of intense electromagnetic radiation generated by a nuclear explosion.
2. A pulse of electromagnetic radiation emitted by certain devices such as citizen band radio and cellular phones.

electromagnetic pulse
A pulse of intense electromagnetic radiation generated by certain physical events, especially by a nuclear explosion. The pulse includes a continuous spectrum of low frequencies and can interfere with the operation of electrical equipment.

The electromagnetic radiation from a strong electronic pulse, most commonly caused by a nuclear explosion that may couple with electrical or electronic systems to produce damaging current and voltage surges. Also called EMP. See also electromagnetic radiation.
