Otoliths were assayed by using both electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).
DuPont de Nemours Experimental Station in Wilmington, DE where he became involved in x-ray fluorescence (XRF) but soon developed an interest in Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) when DuPont purchased one of the first commercial Applied Research Laboratories (ARL) scanning electron microprobes.
Using electron microscopy and electron probe microanalysis, the researchers found that while Ca was distributed evenly in the inclusion volume; strontium (Sr) was found mainly in the core of the inclusions.
