electron capture
n
1. (Physics / Nuclear Physics) Physics the transformation of an atomic nucleus in which an electron from the atom is spontaneously absorbed into the nucleus. A proton is changed into a neutron, thereby reducing the atomic number by one. A neutrino is emitted. The process may be detected by the consequent emission of the characteristic X-rays of the resultant element Former name K-capture
2. (Physics / General Physics) the spontaneous or induced recombination of free electrons with ions or by transfer from other atoms or ions

Hitachi High-Technologies added electron capture dissociation to its LC-IT-TOF system via a module on the front end of the mass spectrometer.
The new method combines two different ionic dissociation methods, collision induced dissociation (CID) and electron capture dissociation (ECD), to analyze proteins thoroughly by quickly switching the dissociation methods.
When explosives vapors are introduced into the electron capture detector (ECD), the detector's standing current changes, and an electronic signal goes off, indicating the presence of an explosive or another electronegative compound.
