The study, which looked at over 30,000 records - including those in Northumberland and County Durham - found the number of Irish Catholic names was dramatically lower among second generation Irish, while the frequencies of English Protestant names went up.
As a result, there appears to be no one clear definition of the "turke" in either the English Protestant or the continental Catholic mind, resulting in such variants as the perception by Catholics that the "turke" could be either the Ottomans or the English Protestants.
