The new patriarch was born in Syria in 1944, but from 1986 until his election as patriarch, served at the eparchy of Our Lady of Deliverance in Newark, New Jersey.
He was a former member of the Diocesan Pastoral Council of Melkite Greek Catholic Eparchy of Newton and received the Cross of Jerusalem by the Patriarch Maximos in recognition of his service.
Two dioceses found not in compliance in 2005--Baker, Oregon and the Eparchy of Our Lady of Deliverance of Newark--refused to participate in the 2006 audit.
