The presence of epiphyllous inflorescences as described in detail by Dickinson and Sattler (1974, 1975) in Phyllonoma and Helwingia probably reflects the close relationship of both taxa.
Developmental studies of the epiphyllous inflorescences of Phyllonoma integerrima (Dulongiaceae) (Dickinson & Sattler, 1974) and "hooded" barley (Gupta & Stebbins, 1969) have indicated that the inflorescence primordia are initiated on the leaf and bract primordia, rather than from the shoot apex.
