In demanding recognition of its right to exist, Israel is ensuring that the Palestinians agree to Israel's character being set in stone as an exclusivist Jewish state, one that privileges the rights of Jews over all other ethnic, religious and national groups inside the same territory.
Indeed, one could argue that they are integral to any Zionist project in which Zionism is understood in nation-statist terms, that is, in exclusivist terms linking demographic concerns and territorial control: space must be created, borders must be drawn, in which one national group will have hegemony over resources, moves that spell dispossession, expulsion, and at times death for others.
He explains the limitations of these terms and gives his reasoning on the use of purist because it describes the "distinguishing characteristic" of the group as absolutist and uncompromising, with an intolerant exclusivist attitude (pages 16-25.
