The new firm bids to build the famous Cunard express liner Mauretania, which goes on to hold the Blue Riband for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic for 22 years.
June 1903: Wigham Richardson's Neptune Shipyard company merged with Swan and Hunter to bid for the order to build the river's most famous passenger ship, the Cunard express liner Mauretania.
The departure point for Cunard's express liner service to New York was transferred from Liverpool to Southampton in 1919.
