According to a new guide published by the Center for Social Media at American University, this is a false dilemma.
When the philosophical jargon is stripped away from the allegedly "more nuanced" views, it is not clear at all to me that Beversluis has made his charge of false dilemma stick rather than just muddying the water.
He hates the thought of consumers being caught on the horns of false dilemmas - forced to choose between two marginally different variants of the same thing - but I can't help feeling the choice between over-consumption and enoughism is simply one of degree.
