Found in woods, hedges, scrub and gardens, they can be distinguished by their red-brown fur, the fact that their ears are clearly visible (half hidden in the field vole) and that its tail is half as long as its body (it is shorter on a field vole, but longer on a mouse).
Since shrews and bank voles (Myodes glareolus) prefer forests, they are probably less vulnerable to the frost seesaw effect than field voles, which mainly occupy open habitats (Solonen, 2006).
I've never even seen a water vole before, but apparently I have got a field vole living in my compost bin at home.
