Although no one knows what dark matter is made of, researchers suspect that it's responsible for pulling galaxies and galaxy clusters into the gargantuan, filamentary structures seen in the sky today. Branching filamentary structures sometimes form in the streamers, as documented through high-speed photographic experiments conducted by Hebner, Kelley, and Stricklett at NBS in the 1980s [58]. This composite portrait is providing a closer look at the clumpy, filamentary nature of the remnant, a more precise measurement of its distance from Earth, and a clearer indication of the type of star that exploded to become Kepler's supernova. |
