There scientists discovered something startling: mineral evidence of a naturally occurring nuclear fission reactor that had spontaneously sprung to life almost 2 billion years ago and operated for hundreds of thousands of years. Though known to be generated routinely in nuclear fission reactors, these short-lived nuclei had never previously been observed. Others aim to cut the volume and toxicity of wastes from civilian nuclear reactors, to design environmentally benign fuel cells, to demonstrate the viability of fusion-generated electric power, to standardize the design of advanced fission reactors, to produce high-temperature superconducting equipment (from wires to refrigeration systems), and to generate hydrogen from renewable resources. |
