Today's photograph shows the main street in Ludworth, County Durham, with St Andrew Church, a striking timber building with an A-frame expressed externally like flying buttresses.
The combination of the canopied vaults, the thin elements ranging over the surface, the stained glass set in, the traceried windows and the flying buttresses, had the effect of dematerializing the masonry so the entire building appeared to belong to another mystic universe.
Visitors are also attracted by the imposing church, well known for the unusual construction of the octagonal tower with its flying buttresses, as well as, more recently, the spectacular flood lighting which creates a spectacle visible for miles around each night.
