Fou·cault  (f-k), Jean Bernard Léon 1819-1868.
French physicist who estimated the speed of light and determined that it travels more slowly in water than in air (1850). He also employed a pendulum to prove the rotation of the earth (1851) and invented the gyroscope (1852).

Foucault, Michel 1926-1984.
French philosopher and historian who explored the role played by power in shaping knowledge. His works include Madness and Civilization (1961) and the multi-volume History of Sexuality (1976-1986).

He demonstrated by means of the pendulum named after him the rotation of the earth on its axis (1851) and invented the gyroscope (1852)

According to French philosopher Michel Foucalt, the purpose of the Bentham's Panopticon is "to induce in the inmate a state of conscious and permanent visibility that assures the automatic functioning of power.
00 Paperback B2430 Upon the publication of the 3000 pages of Foucault's Dits et ecrits, one Foucalt scholar commented that it still would not be possible to come to a full evaluation of Foucault's place in 20th century intellectual life without access to the 13 semester-length lecture courses offered by Foucault at the College de France.
There are short dramatizations that are supposed to illustrate the different points of view of different theoreticians such as Foucalt.
