Yom Kippur War

(Historical Terms) a war in which Egypt and Syria launched a joint surprise attack on Israel on the Jewish festival of Yom Kippur (Oct. 6, 1973). It ended with a ceasefire (Oct. 25, 1973), Syrian forces having been repulsed, Egypt having reoccupied a belt of the Sinai desert on the E bank of the Suez Canal, and Israel having established a salient on the W bank of the Suez Canal
