Franche-Com·té  (fräsh-k-t)
A historical region and former province of eastern France. The region was first occupied by a Celtic tribe in the fourth century b.c. and became part of France after 1676. Until that time its control was continually disputed by France, Germany, Burgundy, Switzerland, and Spain.
