Muchas universidades estadounidenses poseen dentro del campus hermandades conocidas como fraternities o frats (de hombres) o sororities (de mujeres). Estas hermandades, a las que sólo se puede ingresar mediante invitación, organizan fiestas, recogen fondos con fines benéficos e intentan hacer que su hermandad sobresalga entre las demás. Suelen tener nombres compuestos de letras del alfabeto griego, como por ejemplo Kappa Kappa Gamma. Existe división de opiniones en cuanto a los beneficios o ventajas de estas hermandades; para los miembros es una buena manera de hacer amigos, pero la mayoría de los estudiantes piensan que son elitistas y discriminatorias. Durante las ceremonias secretas de iniciación, que incluyen varias pruebas físicas y novatadas que se denominan hazing, se ha producido la muerte de varios estudiantes, lo cual ha aumentado la polémica.
