According to Halperin and Harris, it was Bill's success at taming the Freak Show that helped him bounce back from the failure of his first two years in office, when he suffered from the debilitating perception that he was both weak and wrong. He has grown up in a freak show, the Faeryland 1899 Review, and everyone around him is a human oddity of one kind or another. The novel only gets creepier (and more overtly sexual) as Ivy matures and learns more about her heritage, but Gantos keeps it from becoming an all-out freak show by posing provocative questions about whether it's possible to escape one's genes. |
