The hats were first worn by British soldiers following the defeat of the French Imperial Guards in the 1815 Battle of Waterloo.
The Welsh Guards were set up to commemorate the bravery of the Welsh during the Great War, the Irish as a tribute to those Irish who served in the British Army and the Grenadiers after the first regiment of foot-guards who defeated the French Imperial Guard at Waterloo in 1815 in the closing stages of that battle.
The regiment, dating back to the mid 17th century, adopted its current name in 1815 after the Battle of Waterloo to commemorate victory over the Grenadiers of the French Imperial Guard.
