Lisa Croudace, one of the soloists on clarinet, performed the Fughetta (five bagatelles) by Finzi and was a soloist not to be missed.
Associate conductor Sarah Nommensen will lead the group in Gabriel Pierne's Preludio and Fughetta for Winds and Ottorino Respighi's "Suite of Ancient Airs and Dances.
At times, the music rose up--a fughetta and a few finely Verdian ensembles in Act III--to show that indeed, greater musical distinction and less narrative rant would have sparked things immeasurably.
