Czech-born American mathematician and logician best known for his proof that the consistency of a mathematical system in which the truths of arithmetic can be expressed cannot be proven from within that system (1931).

He showed (Gödel's proof) that in a formal axiomatic system, such as logic or mathematics, it is impossible to prove consistency without using methods from outside the system

Gödel proved that, except for the most trivial, no system of axioms could be both consistent and complete.
