Gö·ring also Goe·ring  (grng, gûr-, grng), Hermann Wilhelm 1893-1946.
German Nazi politician and military leader who was responsible for the buildup of German air forces, directed the German wartime economy, and was named Hitler's successor (1939). Severely criticized for Germany's military decline, he lost favor with Hitler and was stripped of his command (1943). After he was convicted and sentenced to death at the Nuremberg trials (1946), he committed suicide.

He commanded Hitler's storm troops (1923) and as Prussian prime minister and German commissioner for aviation (1933-45) he founded the Gestapo and mobilized Germany for war. Sentenced to death at Nuremberg, he committed suicide

I thought [Hermann] Göring was charming if fat, while Goebbels I must say, was likeable and intelligent.
For a time, Raeder sought a compromise solution with his rival on the issue, and fought hard to work something out, but while he was sincere in these efforts, the portly Göring was not.
Thus their excursion into horsebreeding was no more than a means of social climbing (it did, however, yield a hilarious photograph, reproduced here, in which a grotesquely white-suited Göring, congratulates Fritz Thyssen on a win, his eyes fixed on the horse as though it were his lunch).
