I thought [Hermann] Göring was charming if fat, while Goebbels I must say, was likeable and intelligent. For a time, Raeder sought a compromise solution with his rival on the issue, and fought hard to work something out, but while he was sincere in these efforts, the portly Göring was not. Thus their excursion into horsebreeding was no more than a means of social climbing (it did, however, yield a hilarious photograph, reproduced here, in which a grotesquely white-suited Göring, congratulates Fritz Thyssen on a win, his eyes fixed on the horse as though it were his lunch). |
