25 (BNA) THE GENERAL ORGANISATION OF SEA PORTS (GOP) ANNOUNCED THE COMMENCEMENT OF IMO SAR GMDSS MISSION (INTERNATIONAL MARITIME ORGANISATION SEARCH AND RESCUE GLOBAL MARITIME DISTRESS AND SAFETY SYSTEM).
There is an initiative within the maritime industry for MSS systems to become certified for use in the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and only Iridium can provide complete universal coverage over all the GMDSS Regions, including A4 (the extreme polar regions).
From January 1, 2010, after several years of product development and standardisation work through international organisations, the AIS-Sart will be adopted into the GMDSS regulations as an alternative to the Radar-Sart.
