The GRU was created in 1918 under Leon Trotsky, and is controlled by the military general staff.
The intelligence service known in Russia by its acronym GRU is the country's largest spy agency.
THE GRU (Glavnoye Razvedyvatelnoye Upravlenie or Chief Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff) was not a wing of the KGB (Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti or Committee for State Security).
