From 1953 to 1954, she shared a house with British Quaker Marjorie Sykes at the ashram in Sevagram, where Sykes served as principal of "Gandhiji's Basic Education" program, training teachers to promote Gandhian social reforms and educational experiments.
In Montgomery, Halberstam wrote, "blacks had, using Gandhian tactics, stayed off the buses and walked to work or carpooled (or forced the middle-class white women for whom they worked as maids to drive over and pick them up each morning).
While more substantive than many such materials, the PBS lesson still leaves out the critical Gandhian step of self-purification.
