A decision to extend the life of the Garona plant in northern Spain would be a U-turn for Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero who had vowed to gradually phase out nuclear power.
Industry Minister Miguel Sebastian said the Garona plant in northern Spain, which had been designed to function only until 2011 and whose operating permit expires on Sunday, would now be allowed to operate until July 2013.
But on Monday the five-member board of the country's nuclear watchdog unanimously agreed to recommend that the Garona nuclear plant in northern Spain should get a new 10-year operating licence if it upgrades its safety equipment.
