One of the main reasons for locating a conference centre on the Gateshead Quays is the presence of The Sage.
Gateshead Council leader Mick Henry said: "This kind of development would fit in with our ambitions to be a city and would be another exciting new use of Gateshead Quays that would benefit the whole region.
The firm has appointed them to lead on delivering a number of strategic projects, including Newcastle's Science Central, Gateshead Quays and the Ouseburn cultural quarter.
