Elementary teacher education in Taiwan has been facing the dilemma of cultivating prospective teachers to be generalists or specialists for certain subject areas since 1997.
Perhaps all generalists in the academy suffer from a kind of intellectual disorder.
That means that professional services organizations must be generalists and specialists at the same time; generalists, in that one has to know every aspect of the business sector that they service, and specialists, in that service companies must understand the nuances of each of their clients' businesses.
