They are associated mainly with civil service reform (if not with helping the starving Irish), MPs (Charles Phillips Trevelyan) and history (through George Otto Trevelyan and George Macaulay Trevelyan).
Their son George Otto Trevelyan became Liberal MP for Tynemouth, served as a Cabinet minister under Gladstone and in 1869 married Caroline Philips, the daughter of a wealthy Manchester merchant.
Thomas notes that Macaulay's reputation had formidable guardians in his sisters and in his nephew George Otto Trevelyan (1838-1928).
