Gilbert Islands
A group of islands of western Kiribati in the central Pacific Ocean. Inhabited by a mixture of Polynesian and Melanesian peoples, the islands were first visited by the British in 1765, made a protectorate in 1892, and later became part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony (1915-1976). Full independence as the principal islands of Kiribati was achieved in 1979.

He was involved in campaigns in the Gilbert Islands and the Marshall Islands, and, along with fellow carrier the Enterprise, formed a night fighter task force for Iwo Jima.
Although the colonel did not fight in the Tarawa Atoll in the Gilbert Islands, he saw ample combat in Vietnam with amphibious assault tactics that proved so vital to Tarawa's costly capture and provided lessons for later battles such as Io Jima.
Fiji, the Gilbert Islands and Nigeria are just some of the places which signposted his colourful childhood.
