OCTOBER 1979 FALLOUT FOUL-UP Concern over commercial gill-netting grows as fishermen witness the deadly "fallout" of kingfish that bump into gill nets and fall to the bottom dead.
Among the main culprits are bottom set gill nets, which are anchored to the sea floor and fitted with floats, forming an undersea wall of netting that can stretch several thousand metres.
Though the mesh of gill nets can be sized to target particular fish species, the targeting is imprecise - other types of fish, particularly sturgeon and steelhead, get caught in gill nets and die before they can be released.
