Giovanni Battista Montini was the wartime subordinate of the Cardinal Secretary of State Luigi Maglione and one of the very closest aides of Eugenio Pacelli, Pope Pius XII. According to Uki Goni's The Real Odessa (Phayer's source), not only were those scoundrels Eugenio Pacelli and Giovanni Battista Montini implicated in the "ratline," so too was Geoffrey Fisher, archbishop of Canterbury--the first to visit a pope since the Reformation. After recalling Giovanni Battista Montini from his "exile" as archbishop of Milan, Pope John obligingly died, so that Montini could assume the role for which it seems every moment of his life had been a preparation. |
