A total of 897 flies of both sexes were caught; Glossina fuscipes quanzensis was the only tsetse fly species found (Table). Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), also known as sleeping sickness, is caused by a flagellated trypanosome protozoan and transmitted by Glossina (tsetse) flies. Wherever people come into close proximity with these reservoirs (when visiting game parks, for example) the potential exists for transmission to humans by the tsetse fly vectors of the Glossina morsitans group. |
