During a search of the facility, a hazardous materials crew found traces of arabinic and gluconic acids -- organic substances commonly found in building materials and food additives, Humphrey said. In a solution containing glucose, the enzyme converts that sugar to gluconic acid, increasing the acidity of the polymer. In the presence of a compound known as NADP, this enzyme transforms a glucose molecule into gluconic acid and attaches a freed hydrogen atom to NADP, forming NADPH. |
