Glyc`yr`rhi´za
n.1.(Bot.) A genus of papilionaceous herbaceous plants, one species of which (G. glabra), is the licorice plant, the roots of which have a bittersweet mucilaginous taste.

Of the children taking part in the study, 64 were exposed to high levels of liquorice glycyrrhiza - a component found in the confectionery - in the womb, 46 to moderate levels and 211 to low levels.
A component in liquorice called glycyrrhiza is believed to cause placenta damage, leading to stress hormones crossing from mother to baby.
