Golden Gate
A strait in western California connecting the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. Discovered in 1579 by Sir Francis Drake, it was known as the Golden Gate long before the name gained popularity during the gold rush of 1849. The Golden Gate Bridge, which spans the strait, was completed in 1937.

The Gate: The Golden Gate Strait is the entrance to the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean.
In 1846, the entrance to the San Francisco Bay was named as the Golden Gate Strait by an engineer who said it reminded him of a harbour in Istanbul named Chrysoceras, or Golden Horn.
