A musical note, especially an appoggiatura, that is added as an embellishment, and is printed in small type and not counted in rhythm.

Phil Cunningham's Grace Notes Saturday, 8pm, BBC2 Folk musician Phil sets out to discover how Scotland's Catholics and Protestants have used music to express their beliefs - and we're not talking about the dubious songs heard on the terraces during an Old Firm game.
Besides the usual swing rhythm and syncopation, we find grace notes, triplet quarters, the shake/tremolo, mixed meters and an extensive use of the walking bass line.
