1. A provision in a statute that exempts those already involved in a regulated activity or business from the new regulations established by the statute.
2. A clause in the constitutions of several southern states before the year 1915, intended to disfranchise African Americans by exempting from stringent voting requirements all lineal descendants of persons who were registered voters before 1867.

Deputy Chief Demers estimated it would cost between $75,000 to $100,000 to install automatic water sprinklers in the apartment complex, but because the complex has grandfather rights, it is not required to install them.
We have an agreement with Australia, New Zealand, Canada and other Commonwealth countries which allows Grandfather Rights for anyone to come to Britain and work for up to four years.
Licensees have until August 6 to convert or vary their licences but if they fail to do so, they lose their so-called grandfather rights and must re-apply.
