A condition usually caused by excessive production of thyroid hormone and characterized by an enlarged thyroid gland, protrusion of the eyeballs, a rapid heartbeat, and nervous excitability. Also called exophthalmic goiter.

Graves' disease  (grvz)
An autoimmune disease of the thyroid gland characterized by excessive production of thyroid hormone, goiter, protrusion of the eyeballs (exophthalmos), and symptoms of hyperthyroidism, such as rapid heartbeat and weight loss. The disease is named after its discoverer, Irish physician Robert James Graves (1796-1853).

Graves' disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of hyperthyroidism.
In fact, in earlier Campath studies involving people with MS, there was a 26% incidence of developing Graves' disease.
She had also been on thyroid hormone replacement therapy for 2 years for the treatment of Graves' disease and the hypothyroidism associated with it.
