New names could include Lancewood (Florida nectandra), great leadtree (great leucaena), Florida clover-ash (Florida tetrazygia), greenheart (coffee colubrina), princesstree (royal paulownia), fevertree (pinckneya), and Florida toadwood (Florida cupania).
These include cement, recycled plastics, and tropical hardwoods, such as greenheart, that are more resistant to shipworms than other woods are.
In Florida, the primary trading partner with the Caribbean, South and Central America, nearly 60% of all trade (by value) was oceanborne, a smaller percentage than in 1998, according to a study by Charles Jainarain, president, Greenheart International, a Miami consulting firm.
