While the corpus of Greek patristic writers known and studied in western Europe during the Middle Ages pales in comparison to what would later be recovered and studied during the Renaissance, Greek patristic authors such as Chrysostom, Origen, Basel, Gregory of Nazianus, and others were in fact read in Latin translations in the monasteries, cathedral schools, and universities of medieval western Europe.
